What is an X-Ray Attack?

The X-Ray: Hidden Power
White's rook on d1 'sees through' its own rook on d4 to support control of d8. If Black ever exchanges on the d-file, White recaptures and takes over the file completely.
Back Rank X-Ray Mate
White plays Rxd8+! After Rxd8, the rook on d1 X-rays through to d8 with Rxd8# — back rank mate. The doubled rooks fire twice down the same file.
X-Ray Defense
Black's bishop attacks the white queen on d1 — but White's rook on d8 X-rays all the way down the d-file to protect it. If Black plays Bxd1, Rxd1 simply recaptures. X-rays can defend through pieces as well as attack through them.
