What is Overloading?

How It Works — Step by Step
One Piece, Two Jobs
Black's queen on d8 has two defensive jobs at once: it guards the rook on a8 AND the knight on f6. One piece cannot hold two duties forever — as soon as White attacks either target again, the queen is overloaded.
Overloaded Back Rank Defender
Black's rook on e8 defends the back rank AND the bishop on e5 — it is overloaded. Rxe5! exploits this: after Rxe5, the back rank collapses with Rd8+ Re8 Rxe8#.
Even the King Can Be Overloaded
Black's king is the only defender of BOTH the bishop on d7 and the pawn on f7. Nxd7! wins material: if Kxd7 recaptures, Rxf7+ picks off the second target with check. One defender cannot hold two weaknesses.
Exploiting the Overloaded Queen
Black's queen on d7 is stretched thin: it defends the rook on e8 AND the knight on g4. White cashes in with Rxe8+! Qxe8 — and now Qxg4 wins a clean piece. Spotting an overloaded queen is a hallmark of tactical mastery.
