How It Works — Step by Step
Identify the backward pawn
Black has a backward pawn on d6 — it cannot advance because White controls d5. The square in front becomes a powerful outpost.
Should Black play ...d5?
Black considers the freeing ...d5 advance. If it succeeds, the backward pawn is eliminated. Timing is everything.
Exploiting the outpost
White's knight has landed on d5 — the hole in front of the backward d6-pawn, where no black pawn can ever attack it. Black's best is usually to trade it off (...Nxd5), but after exd5 the pawn fixes d6 for good and White gets the half-open e-file. The hole in Black's structure never disappears.
The Sicilian d6 — a classic backward pawn
In many Sicilian positions, Black's d6 pawn is backward. White's plan: control d5, double rooks on the d-file, pressure d6.
