Spot the IQP advantages
White's d4-pawn is isolated — no white pawns on the c- or e-files to support it. But look at the compensation: e5 is a permanent outpost for the knight, the d3-bishop points at h7, and the half-open files give every white piece an active role. In the middlegame the IQP is a spearhead, not a weakness.
The classic blockade
Black's knight sits on d5, directly in front of the isolated pawn — the classic blockade, anchored by the e6-pawn and backed by the rook. The pawn can never advance, and the blockading knight loses none of its power standing still. Knights are the best blockaders of an IQP.
Should you accept the IQP?
A critical structural decision in the Queen's Gambit: recapture with the knight (...Nxd5) and keep a flexible pawn structure, or with the pawn (...exd5) and head for an isolated d-pawn in exchange for free development and open lines? Choices like this shape the entire middlegame.
IQP becomes a weakness in the endgame
With the pieces traded away, the IQP shows its true face. Black's rook attacks d4 from in front, and White's rook must passively defend it. One side's pieces are free, the other's are chained to a pawn — this is why the side with the IQP avoids exchanges.
